Keep photos out of iCloud and off Apple's servers

iCloud Photos is convenient, but it means copies of your photos live on Apple's servers and sync to every device on your account. For genuinely sensitive photos, many people want them to stay on one device and sync nowhere.

This is about reducing where your photos exist — ideally to exactly one place that only you can open.

Convenience syncs your photos everywhere

With iCloud Photos on, a photo you take is quickly copied to the cloud and pushed to your iPad, Mac, and any shared device. Turning it off for everything is a blunt instrument — you lose backup for the photos you don't mind syncing, too.

Why the iCloud toggle is all-or-nothing

  • iCloud Photos is a single switch — you can't keep most photos synced but exclude a few sensitive ones.
  • Even with Advanced Data Protection, your photos still live in your iCloud account across devices.
  • Anything in your main library is reachable from any signed-in device.

Arca · No server, fully local

How Arca handles it: local-only by design

Arca has no server and no sync. Photos you import are encrypted and stored only on that iPhone — they never touch iCloud or any cloud, because Arca has nowhere to send them. You keep iCloud Photos on for everyday shots and move the sensitive ones into Arca, where they stay local.

  1. 1

Keep iCloud Photos on for ordinary photos if you like the backup.

  2. 2

Import sensitive photos into Arca — they're removed from the Camera Roll and encrypted locally.

  3. 3

For safety, make an encrypted Arca backup so "local-only" doesn't mean "no backup."

Questions

Does Arca ever upload my photos to a server? +

No. Arca has no account and no server. Imported photos stay encrypted on your device, and nothing syncs anywhere unless you explicitly create and move a backup file yourself.

If photos are local-only, what happens if I lose my phone? +

Local-only means no cloud copy by default, so make an encrypted .arcavault backup and store it somewhere safe. It's encrypted, so it's safe to keep even in cloud storage.
